One of the oldest forms of motorcycle racing is Flat Track, also referred to as dirt track. The origin is to found in America after world war II, where riders slid their machines sideways through turns, just inches apart from each other at speeds in access of 100mph.

Flat Track offers almost continuous overtaking and an unrivalled spectacle. Today's AMA Flat track championship in run on different kinds of soft race courses, varying from ovals between 400 and 1600m, and TT courses which include both left and right hand turns, and jumps. Previously, some of the races were held on asphalt to demonstrate the versatility of riders and machines.

Currently most professional riders have 2 motorcycles, depending on the nature of the race track. The single cylinder motorcycles are used for the short tracks (<800m) and TT races where front brake are allowed as well (front brakes are removed on the ovals for safety reasons).The twin cylinder bikes (twins) are are heavier and used on the longer and faster tracks.

The basic ingredients are smooth dirt tracks in combination with moderate profiled tires (19" control tires). Theoretically any bike can be used for flat track racing but today's AMA regulations limit to 2 cylinders.
